Alpaca Fiber

The value of alpaca fleece is the economic basis of the future market for alpacas. An alpaca breeder with a small herd on small acreage can expect to harvest his animals' fiber and sell their offspring profitably.

Most alpaca ranchers readily sell their fleece for $2 to $6 an ounce to local artisans. Each animal on average will produce five to eight pounds of fleece a year.

ALPACA FARM DAYS – 9/23-25

Join us for lots of alpaca fun on Friday-Sunday, Sept. 23-25 from 11-5pm for our 5th Annual Alpaca Farm Days!  Bring the WHOLE FAMILY (young and old) to meet our alpacas!  You can learn more about these amazing animals from South America with fiber as soft as cashmere and the best part is:  they will eat grain right out of your hand!

You can also enjoy treats and drinks while shopping our alpaca farm store for things made with one of the softest fibers on earth – ALPACA!  We have everything from yarn, rugs, hats, scarves, gloves and even teddy bears!

Sad Loss Today, 7/16/2011

Today we had to say goodbye to our first and oldest alapca, Wildflower (aka Wiffy).  She was 18 1/2 years old and we hope she enjoyed her “retirement” with us these last 5 years.  Love you Wiffy!

Mariners’ Stitch ‘n Pitch

A big THANK YOU to everyone who visited our table at the Seattle Mariners’ Stitch ‘n Pitch on Thursday night! We had a great table location to watch the game but it was a bit chilly as you can see our helper, Dennis, is hunkered down in his sweatshirt. Met lots of great alpaca yarn fans!

Stitch n Pitch with the Mariners – July 14!

Nationally known author (& knitter) DEBBIE MACOMBER visited our table at the Tacoma Rainiers game!

We liked it so much at the Tacoma Rainiers, we’re making it a “double play” with the Mariners! You don’t have to stitch but you can certainly enjoy a great baseball game at a great price – just $15 (limited number available). Time for a great family night of baseball!

There will be DOZENS of fiber arts vendors at the game. Firwood Farm Alpacas will be there with our alpaca yarn – so you can shop for yourself or a gift for the fiber artist in your life. Contact me for tickets and details!

SPRING FARM DAYS June 4-5

Our first Farm Days of 2011 will soon be here!  Join us on Saturday or Sunday, June 4-5 from 11-5pm

As you can see from the picture, our littlest baby alpaca (or cria) is growing up quickly.  Bellina and her Mom Belle are waiting for visitors to feed them grain.  Hopefully the sun will shine for Farm Days where you can meet (and feed!) our alpacas and this year, kids will be able to dye some alpaca fiber with Kool-Aid!

Mark your calendars – we hope to see you then.
Greg & Leanna

PUYALLUP SPRING FAIR – April 14-17

Stop by and visit our booth at the Puyallup Spring Fair this week!  We will be located in the “J” Barn with the Shepherds’ Extravaganza.  We will also be selling the new beaded bracelets there so stop by and maybe pick up a gift for Mother’s Day!

We also have new babies at Firwood Farm.  Not the alpaca kind though…we let one of our new bantam hens set on some of her eggs and she hatched four baby chicks.  We purchased four more chicks at the feed store (two that lay colored eggs!) and she adopted them without hesitation so we have eight little chicks running around the barnyard.  Spring is really here!
